APRIL
April stared at the money in her hand before shoving it into her purse. It felt dirty, like blood money or something. Stop being ridiculous, she chided herself. Itâs nothing like that at all. But that didnât make her feel any better.
It had been weird seeing Carter last night to get the money. Heâd been shifty and uncomfortable, and she was sure sheâd looked the same. Gone were the smiles and flirtations they used to share, and she would be lying if she said she didnât miss them. With a sigh, she grabbed her purse and prepared to head to her appointment. Sheâd set up the appointment over the phone, and theyâd assured her it was early enough that the procedure today would be quick and easy.
Quick and easy, and then she could get her life back. Now, if she could just find her keys.
She looked through her purse again. This was nuts. She was neurotic about putting things back in their place, and she always put her keys in her purse when she came in, but now they were nowhere to be found. Sighing, she began pulling the items out of her purse one by one. She had to have just missed them, but when she reached the bottom of the purse, the keys were still nowhere to be found. What the heck?
April closed her eyes to picture the previous night. Okay, sheâd been a little off-kilter after the meeting with Carter, but she didnât think sheâd been that affected. She remembered locking the car, unlocking the front door, and then⦠the ringing of her cell phone shattered whatever image was about to appear, and she punched the talk button without looking at the caller ID.
âHello?â
âApril? Itâs Carter.â
Her eyes snapped open. Carter? What on earth could he want? Heâd made it clear last night that they were over, that it was time to go their separate ways, and sheâd only asked for half of what the abortion would cost, so why was he calling?
âWhat do you want, Carter? Iâm kind of busy.â It took every ounce of control to keep the sharp tone in her voice.
There was a pause on the other end, then a deep inhale as if he was gathering courage with his breath. âDonât do it.â
April didnât know what sheâd expected to come out of Carterâs mouth, but those three words were certainly not it. âWhat are you talking about? We decided on this already.â Well, heâd decided really and sheâd gone along with it because she was too weak to make her own decision, but regardless, the decision was made.
âI know, but we were wrong. I was wrong. We canât terminate the pregnancy.â
âWhat is going on, Carter? We both agreed that we canât raise this baby.â
âMaybe not, but we can give it a chance. Please, April, I canât go through with it.â
He couldnât go through with it? He wasnât the one who was going to have to go to this appointment. Nor was he the one whose life would change if she didnât go to the appointment.
